Scottsdale
is the perfect place to indulge your love of the outdoors.
With over 20 community parks and numerous hiking trails it
is easy to get out and play in the fresh air and sunshine.
Check
the Scottsdale
Recreation Guide for a park near you and you’re ready
to take off. The Indian Bend Wash Multi-Use Path and greenbelt
(see "tips" below for location) is an ideal place to run,
walk, skate, or bicycle while enjoying spectacular mountain
and desert views.
For a
1.75 mile hike each way rated moderate by the Sierra Club
head out to Pinnacle
Peak Park (see "tips" below for location) in north Scottsdale.
You will be rewarded at the top of this newly opened trail
with unforgettable views of the valley.
Other
opportunities include the McDowell
Sonoran Preserve for mountain and desert hiking that connects
with other open space in the region including McDowell
Mountain Regional Park, 15 miles northeast of Scottsdale
(see "tips" for directions and map). This 21,000 acre recreation
area draws outdoor enthusiasts with over 40 miles of hiking,
mountain biking and horseback riding trails amid the beauty
of the Sonoran Desert.
For those
desiring travel farther afield we suggest Lost
Dutchman State Park at the foot of the Superstition Mountains.
This area of the Sonoran Desert has long been shrouded in
mystery and is reputedly the site of the Lost Dutchman Mine.
The Park offers hiking trails, nature trails and a visitor
center.
Wherever
your outdoor adventure takes you the appeal of this special
corner of the world is sure to entice you back for more.
Tip:
Common sense says take precautions before starting outdoor
activities in the dry desert climate. Be prepared with plenty
of water- a gallon a day for adults (with frequent sips);
carry non-perishable snacks; dress in layers as it is warm
during the day but cool in the morning and evening; wear sturdy
shoes; remember sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, and a hat
(wide-brimmed works well).
Tip:
The Indian Bend Multi-Use Path and greenbelt parallels Hayden
Rd. and is east of and runs parallel to Scottsdale Rd.
Tip:
To reach Pinnacle
Peak Park from downtown Scottsdale take 101 north to Pima
Rd./ Princess exit and then Pima Rd north to Dynamite Blvd.
and follow the signs east to the park.
Tip:
To reach McDowell
Mountain Regional Park from Scottsdale Rd., go east on
Shea Blvd. to Fountain Hills; or take SR87 north to Fountain
Hills; take Saguaro Blvd. through the town of Fountain Hills,
turn right and go 4 miles to Park entrance (see map). There
is an entrance fee per vehicle. Call (480) 471-0173 for further
information.

Dutchman State Park is located 5 miles north of Apache
