Whenever
we come into new territory there is always the desire to explore.
Since 1963 visitors have been introduced to Scottsdale’s treasures
by taking the Desert
Foothills Scenic Drive and scenic loops.
The 6
mile Scenic Drive starts north of downtown Scottsdale at Scottsdale
Rd. and Happy Valley Rd. Watch for signs identifying desert
trees and plants along the drive and soon you will know the
difference between a saguaro and a cholla. The drive brings
the magnificent McDowell Mountains, Pinnacle Peak and Lone
Mountain into closer view- these natural wonders have entranced
travelers for centuries.
To get
on the Pima
Road scenic loop we suggest continuing north on Scottsdale
Rd. (which becomes Tom Darlington Dr.) and then going east
on Cave Creek Rd. and then south on Pima Rd. This loop highlights
the stunning scenery of the Sonoran Desert with its wide-open
spaces. Pima Rd. leads to Happy Valley Rd. where a right turn
(west) takes you back to Scottsdale Rd.
To begin
the Pinnacle
Peak scenic loop go east on Dynamite Blvd. off Pima Rd.
(or Scottsdale Rd.) and then turn south on Alma School Parkway
and then west on Happy Valley Rd. to Pima Rd. or a little
further to Scottsdale Rd. The oft-photographed Peak is a southwest
landmark and dominates the desert landscape.
Together
all three drives can take less than an hour but with so many
interesting things to see and do along the way not to mention
photo opportunities and refreshment stops there is no need
to rush.
Tip:
Check the website
map for Desert Foothills Scenic Drive and driving directions
as there are different ways to approach the Scenic Drive and
loops; for a special evening treat the drive down Happy Valley
Rd. from Pinnacle Peak shows off the great Arizona sunset
and the lights of Scottsdale.
Tip:
Be on the lookout for other top Scottsdale visitor attractions
along the Scenic Drive: Rawhide
Western Town, MacDonald’s
Ranch, and el Pedregal
Marketplace (location of Heard
Museum North).
Tip:
The Desert
Walking Area is located on the east side of Scottsdale
Rd. 13/4 miles north of Pinnacle Peak Rd. Take a break and
learn more about the desert habitat of coyotes, hummingbirds
and rattlesnakes.
